Thread Count: New Directions in Fiber Art is an opportunity for artists to illustrate the unique qualities of thread and textiles in conveying meaning through mark-making and structure. Stitch,
surface, construction, joinery, embellishment: contemporary fiber artists use these methods and others to link craft and design, invoke social and environmental concepts, and alter or refresh views of fashion. Qualified entries include sculptures, wearables, and wall-hangings.
Awards: Cash awards for Juror’s Choice ($250) and Honorable Mention ($100).
Accepting: Wall-hangings, wearables, and sculptures. Multiple but conceptually related works may be submitted as a single piece or together in groupings. The gallery has 14’ ceilings, but if your entry is taller than 6’ or wider than 4’, please call or email the gallery to confirm it can be accommodated before you submit your entry.
Juror: Susan Taber Avila
Susan T. Avila is Professor of Design at University of California, Davis. Her studio practice focuses on repurposing textile waste into new structures to prompt examinations of social and ethnographic concepts, sustainability, and awareness of global issues. Her recent body of work, Matters of Dis-ease , explores the social awareness, stereotypes, and scientific views of women's cardiovascular health, through a re-examination of the modern symbolism of the red
dress. Avila’s processes often combine traditional handicrafts with new technologies. Her work has been widely exhibited, including in Argentina, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Finland, Lithuania, Mexico, Spain, Swaziland, Turkey, UK, Ukraine, Uruguay, and across the United States. She was a co-creator of fiberscene.com (2000-2010), and her artwork and articles have been published in numerous books and professional journals in the fiber and design fields.
