Northwest Pastel Society
NPS Mixed Media Member Exhibit 2017

Mixed Media Show 2017
Gallery North Edmonds WA
401 Main St, Edmonds, WA 98020

Edmonds Art Walk 5-8 PM: 02/16/17

DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL NOVEMBER 27, 2016, 11:59 P.M. PST

About this exhibit
This is, to my knowledge, the first mixed media exhibit staged by NPS.  With anything new there are oversights and discrepancies in the setting up of the show.  With that in mind, please realize that these are guidelines. We do not intend to stifle your creativity in any fashion. We want to allow the free spirit of artist exploration to be the spirit of the show.

Keep in mind these two critical points. There must be clear evidence of at least two (2) mediums used on the surface and clearly visible.  Underpainting with a medium and covering it with pastel is not holding with the spirit of the exhibit. A medium underpainting visible through the pastel and a viable part of the finished work will be accepted. Please DO NOT limit yourself to this example however. You are free to explore, create and be playful! HAVE FUN!

THIS IS A JURIED EXHIBIT

Awards will be given in this show! Stay Tuned!

Juror Judith Smith NPS DP
My educational background includes an undergraduate degree in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh, and a graduate degree in Art as Applied to Medicine from the University of Toronto. I began my professional life as an artist in 1965, as the medical artist for the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. This first career included black and white illustrations for books, journals, and various teaching materials for medical residents. It also encompassed now antique analog animation techniques for the creation of medical teaching films, as well as design and construction of traveling medical exhibits. A strong interest in the pairing of art and science projects led me to spend almost twenty years exploring all aspects of printmaking. Health concerns caused me to find another avenue of interest; I turned to neon sculpture with found objects. Then, approximately fifteen years ago, searching for something that might be more marketable to support my studio, I discovered pastel, and more recently - encaustic, which have become more satisfying both for my soul, and my creditors.

I hold signature membership and “distinguished pastellist” status in the Northwest Pastel Society, and signature memberships in the Pastel Society of America, Pastel Society of the West Coast, and Knickerbocker Artists, New York. I also maintain juried membership in Women Painters of Washington and The Society of Animal Artists, New York.

CRITERIA FOR EXHIBITION

All Work Must Be For Sale

1.    Each artist may enter 3 pieces. A maximum of 2 pieces may be accepted.

2.    MEMBER entry fee is $30 for up to 3 entries.  NON-Member entry fee is $40 for up to 3 entries.  This allows an artist to enter three works of art and the fee is non-refundable after the entry deadline has passed.  All entry fees must be paid by the entry deadline.

3.    The NPS Chairpersons have the right to refuse all work that does not meet these criteria or if it is deemed in any way inappropriate.

4.    Work must be original, mixed media with two or more compatible mediums or techniques and use of soft pastels must be recognizable on at least 25% of the surface, but no more than 75% of the surface.

Some of the many options are: monotype, handmade prints, watercolors, acrylic inks, pastels, collage, acrylic paint, colored pencils, etc. Mixed techniques can include stencils, scratching, drawing, painting, scraping, collage, finger marks, use of various tools to apply or remove paint, etc.

Mediums used are only considered a distinct mixed media element if the mediums have a significant impact upon the finished work. Diluted paint or pastel underpainting must produce a significant texture or other noticeable properties which are visible in the final work to be considered as mixed media. If in doubt, please contact your Mixed Media Show Chairpersons.

5.    Work must be ready to hang with a tight wire placed on the back, 1/3 from the top is preferred. Eye screw wire connectors are not allowed. The Exhibitions Chairpersons reserves the right to disqualify any work that is not ready for hanging. No pastel or foreign material on the mat or glass. The Artist will not be reimbursed entry fees in this case.

6.    Transportation wrapping materials must be removed from the venue after drop off.

7.    To allow the maximum number of paintings to be hung in this exhibition, the total “footprint”, including frame and all vertical and lateral extensions, must not exceed the maximum outside dimension.
Limitations: Size not to exceed 28x28” frame size (outside dimension of frame Width x Height). You may also use 784 square inches total frame footprint.  Protrusions (bas relief) from the front of the piece are acceptable within reason.

8.    Three-dimensional sculptures will not be accepted.

9.    Canvas pieces must have no staples showing. Edges on gallery-depth canvas or cradled board (1&1/2 inch depth or greater) must be painted or framed. Shallower depth canvas or cradled board (1/2 – 3/4 inches) must be framed.

10.    A label must be securely attached to the back of the work, clearly noting the name and phone number of the artist, the title, price and list of materials used.

11.    The work chosen by the Juror must be for sale. NPS discourages placing an arbitrarily inflated price (e.g. $25,000) on works the Artist does not wish to sell.

12.    All works must be original, created solely by the submitting artist (i.e. no re-prints, cards, kits, giclees)!

13.    The artist must not remove the work before the end of the show.

14.    Insurance is the responsibility of the artist.

Juried Shows

1.    Art submitted to this show must adhere to all of the above in addition to the following:

       a.    must not have been submitted to any previous NPS Exhibition.

       b.    must have been completed without supervision of or critique by a professional artist, juror or art instructor whether or not you have incorporated the professional’s input.

       c.    must not have been developed in a class, tutorial, or workshop whether or not you have incorporated the instructor’s input.

       d.    must have been completed within the past two years.

From Gallery North
All works must be for sale. Gallery North will retain a 40% commission from all works sold. Artists should price their work accordingly. The suggested minimum price for artwork is $100.

For work sold during the show, the Gallery North will pay a 60% commission to the artist no later than the 20th of the month following the sale of the artwork. Note: Artwork may be sold on a layaway basis. The artist agrees that the artist’s commission will be disbursed after the artwork has been paid for in full. Gallery North layaway terms generally require that the layaway be completed in 4 months, but we reserve the right to reasonably extend the time of the layaway as it deems appropriate. Artists will be notified of any layaway arrangements that affect them.

Liability:
The gallery suggests that artists carry their own insurance on their artwork. While the gallery members take every precaution to avoid loss or damage, all artists who enter this show agree to hold Gallery North and its members harmless for any loss or damage incurred.
