Filoli
2016 Valley of the Hearts Delight

Filoli (www.filoli.org) is best known for its sixteen acres of Formal Garden that create a dynamic contrast to the six hundred acres of natural California coastal woodlands. Its beautiful Visitor and Education Center receives approximately 80,000 visitors annually. The exhibit will be held in the Center’s gallery.

EXHIBIT OVERVIEW
What is now known as the Santa Clara Valley was originally a thriving collection of Ohlone Native American settlements. With the arrival of the Spanish and later settlers, the Valley became known as “The Valley of Heart’s Delight” for its thousands of acres of blooming orchards and plants, mild climate and scenic beauty. Until the 1960s, it was the largest fruit production and packing region in the world. Beginning in the middle of the 20th Century, the Santa Clara Valley and its surrounding environs have been transformed into “Silicon Valley,” the foremost center for technology innovation in the country. This exhibit celebrates the beauty, bounty, creativity, history, and cultural heritage of this special piece of geography and its evolution from its Native American roots to the present through contemporary paintings, drawings, photography, and three-dimensional fine art.

The Valley of Hearts Delight will be a juried exhibit of original fine art photographs, drawings, paintings, and other two-dimensional and three-dimensional art that illuminates the Valley in creative ways. For the purposes of this exhibit, the depictions can be a sharp literal representation or, alternatively, an abstractive interpretation. Creativity, viewpoint, technical execution, and overall artistic quality are to be the primary factors for evaluating the entries.

Note: The artist must specify the image size, frame size (if framed), and the selling price for 2D art at the point of submitting the entries. For 3D entries, the object dimensions and selling price must be specified. The price for “not for sale artwork” is entered as NFS.

The entry deadline is on May 22, 2016. Please note we do not extend deadlines.

JURY PROCEDURE
Because the artwork will be juried using your submitted digital images, it is important that your entries are fully representative of the quality and processes that will be incorporated into the final exhibit article. Criteria for acceptance will include artistic sensibilities and adherence to the exhibit theme, and overall suitability for the exhibit. Selected images may be used for producing the exhibit postcard, for Filoli website, and for other promotional materials.
Selection results will be emailed on July 1, 2016 with detailed instructions for preparing and submitting the selected work to Filoli. The decision of the jury members is final. Artwork submitted may or may not be selected for the exhibit.

SALES
Filoli is pleased to extend the opportunity for participating artists to sell their artwork during this exhibit. The selected artists may also participate in the Meet the Artists Weekend September 3–4, when they may display and sell additional artwork. All sales will be handled by Filoli and payment will be made to the artists, minus a 30% donation to Filoli, within 6–weeks after the exhibit closes. Sales tax will be added to the artist's sale price. Artists may also list their artwork as NFS (not for sale).

PRESENTATION OF ARTWORK
•    The 2D exhibit pieces are to be matted (if appropriate) and framed. The maximum frame dimensions permitted are 30 x 40 inches. The minimum frame dimensions permitted are 8 x 10 inches. Another display format may be used if approved by the curator on a case-by-case basis. No giclee reproductions of paintings, drawings, or collages are allowed.
•    Selected 2D artwork must be:
o    Framed and ready to hang – no sawtooths or projecting eye screws are allowed.
o    Plexiglas is preferred but glass is acceptable provided the framed work does not weigh more than 10 lbs.
o    Floating images are discouraged as they often “fall” during shipment.
•    The 3D exhibit pieces should not be larger than 15” height x 10” deep.
•    A label on the back of each submission must include the title of the art and artist’s contact information (name, phone number, e-mail address, home address).
Accepted entries that do not conform to the above presentation may be refused at the time of hanging.

RECEIVING ARTWORK
Artists who are accepted to exhibit will receive detailed instructions for shipping and hand delivery of artwork. The artist is responsible for all shipping and insurance costs.
