Twenty 20 Gallery
Light, Shadow, & Substance – Juried Photography Exhibition
October 17, 2026 – January 16, 2027
Show Statement -
Twenty 20 Gallery invites photographers of all backgrounds, styles, and experience levels to submit their work for our upcoming juried exhibition, Light, Shadow, and Substance.
Photography is, at its core, the act of capturing light. But it is the interplay of light with its inevitable counterpart—shadow—that gives form, depth, and drama to the world around us. This exhibition seeks to explore that delicate dance and the physical or emotional substance that emerges from it.
"Light, Shadow, and Substance" challenges photographers to look beyond the surface of their subjects.
We are seeking images that explore how light reveals and how shadow conceals. We want to see how these two opposing forces interact to give weight, meaning, and texture to the tangible world—or how they can dissolve reality into the abstract.
Submissions can interpret the theme literally, conceptually, or emotionally:
- Light: The spark, the exposure, the illumination, or the fleeting golden hour. How does light define your subject?
- Shadow: The mystery, the contrast, the silhouette, or the quiet spaces in between. How does the absence of light create form or mood?
- Substance: The material, the texture, the human condition, or the underlying truth of a moment. What is the tangible or emotional weight of your image?
From stark black-and-white street photography and dramatic studio portraits to ethereal color landscapes and gritty architectural studies, we welcome all photographic genres and processes (analog, digital, alternative, and manipulated).
