PROSPECTUS

SOCALPAPA 2025 BACK BAY Juried Show and Weekend Display Show & Sale

Sponsored by SOCALPAPA, Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) and OC Parks

This is a two-part show:   1. The Weekend Display Show & Sale – Saturday & Sunday, July 19 & 20

          2. The optional Juried Show – Saturday, July 12 through Friday, July 18

The Weekend Display Show & Sale, July 19 & 20  - Please Read Carefully.

Eligibility: You must be a 2025 SOCALPAPA Member in good standing.

Benefits: The opportunity to sell your art and personally connect with thousands of collectors and new contacts! The split is 65% to artist; 35% to NBC. NBC handles sales, sales tax and payment to artists. Assistance is provided for your grid set-up. Chairs, shade canopies, and lunch are provided on both days.

How to Enter:

Entry opens April 1, 2025; Deadline to sign up is May 31. The fee to register for the Weekend Display Show & Sale is $65. Payment is non-refundable. Space is limited, so do not delay. 

On https://socalpapa.com select the “Events” tab and scroll to Back Bay Show to register and pay by secure credit card payment. All fields must be filled in (name, phone, email). If mailing a check, complete and submit the form and mail a copy of it with the $65 fee immediately to SOCALPAPA, 4790 Irvine Blvd., Irvine, CA 92620.

Choose your preferred grid set up. Choices are (1) zig-zag, (2) horizontal or (3) double Y (from a bird’s eye view these look like this: (1)  /\/\/ , (2) |--| ,  (3) >--<  . If you will be displaying works in watercolor or pastel please indicate that as every effort will be made to ensure shade on your works to limit glare from the glass.  While we cannot guarantee your preferences, we will do our best to accommodate.  

Requirements:

You must be personally present at your booth for load-in on Saturday, the show on both days from 10am until 4pm, and tear down on Sunday. No early tear down allowed.

Plein air and plein air-style studio original paintings only.

The following are not allowed: Nudes, abstract art, still lifes, portraiture (flowers, figures and animals in a natural setting are ok.). Also, no prints – all work must be original.

All art must be framed in a professional manner with a black or brown dust cover and ready to hang with D-rings and wire (no sawtooth hangers). No gallery wrapped or unframed cradled wood panels. (See separate rules document on website.)

Labels must be printed, not handwritten.

Minimum pricing is $250 per painting. 

There will be 2 meetings in advance of the show to cover the rules & instructions, and to answer questions.  Attendance at one of the two is required; meeting dates to be determined.

 

The Juried Show, July 1218  - Please Read Carefully.

Eligibility: You must be a 2025 SOCALPAPA Member in good standing and have first signed up and paid for the two-day Weekend Display Show & Sale.

Benefits: The paintings accepted into the show will be on display and for sale at the Back Bay Muth Interpretive Center from July 12 – 18, where hundreds of visitors to the Muth may see them throughout the week. The split is 65% to artist; 35% to NBC. NBC handles sales, sales tax and payment to artists.

There is an artists’ reception on Friday evening, July 18, from 6-8pm. Each participating artist may invite up to (2) VIP patrons/guests to this event.

You will have the opportunity to win prizes and recognition amongst your peers. The winners, selected by our distinguished juror, will be awarded generous cash* and other prizes. First Place: $1,000; 2nd Place $750; 3rd Place: $500, Winner’s Circle: $500; Honorable Mention, NBC Robinson Award; an OC Parks award, and awards for best Nocturnal, best Sunrise/Sunset, best with a figure in a landscape(human, animal of bird.) 

How to Enter: Once your registration is confirmed for the Weekend Show & Sale, you may enter the juried show on OnlineJuriedShows (log in on this page and click Enter This Show to begin). Up to sixty paintings will be selected by our distinguished juror. Please read the Juried Show separate prospectus for full details/exact instructions.

Requirements:

You must be registered for the Weekend Display Show & Sale in order to submit to the Juried Show.

The Subject matter must be Newport Back Bay or one of the Parks, Beaches & Wilderness areas managed by OC Parks. No exceptions.  See OCParks.com for a list of OC Parks, Beaches and Wilderness areas.

Only original plein air paintings will be considered – no prints or giclees. Original also means your own concept, design and execution, not done in a workshop or under the direction or supervision of another. Plein air means completed at least 70% at the outdoor subject matter’s location (30% studio touch-up/refinement is allowed.)

Artwork may be any painting medium, i.e., oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel. No pen & ink, charcoal, or pencil drawings or sketches.

Canvas or panel size can range from 6x8 to 14x18 or square inch equivalent.  All paintings juried into the show must be framed in a professional manner, backed with a black or brown dust cover, and ready to hang with D-rings and wire (no sawtooth hangers).

All paintings must be for sale, minimum price is $250.

Entering Your Images:

Instructions are on the OnlineJuriedShows.com website. If you need help, contact onlinejuriedshows@gmail.com or 888-666-1351. Image files must be jpg, under 4 mb, and in sRGB colorspace. For best results, images should be at least 1920 pixels on the longest side @ 72 dpi.

You may enter up to 2 images for the single entry fee to the Back Bay show.  If you wish, you may enter three additional images for $15.00 each (for a total of 5 images submitted). All entry fees are non-refundable.

The Show:

Up to Sixty (60) paintings will be juried into the show by our distinguished juror, to be announced.

Accepted paintings must be delivered on Friday, July 11, 2025, to the Muth Interpretive Center Conference Room between 10am – 1pm. 

The paintings will be on display and for sale in the Muth Center Theatre from July 12-18.

The artists’ reception/award presentation is Friday evening, July 18, from 6pm to 8 pm, at the Muth. Artists are required to remove their unsold paintings at the end of the reception.

*Prizes listed with cash amounts include 50% in cash and 50% in in-kind donations such as gift cards and vouchers from our event sponsors.
