SOCALPAPA 2023 BACK BAY Juried Show Weekend Show & Sale PROSPECTUS

Sponsored by SOCALPAPA, Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) and OC Parks

 

This is a two-part show:            1. The Weekend Display Show & Sale, Saturday & Sunday, July 15 & 16

                                                2. The optional Juried Show, Saturday, July 8-Friday, July 14.

 

Eligibility: For both shows, you must be a 2023 SOCALPAPA Member in good standing. In order to enter the Juried Show you must sign up for the two-day Weekend Display Show & Sale.

The Weekend Display Show & Sale, July 15 & 16  - Please Read Carefully.

Benefits: The opportunity to sell your art and connect with current collectors and prospective new customers! The split is 65% to artist; 35% to NBC. NBC handles sales, sales tax and payment to artists. Assistance is provided for your grid set-up. Chairs, shade canopies, and lunch are provided on both days. 

How to Enter: Entry opens April 1, 2023. “Events” tab on the home page (https://www.socalpapa.com), register and pay your $75 fee by secure credit card payment or mail check to SOCALPAPA, 4790 Irvine Blvd., Irvine, CA 92620. (Payment non-refundable; no exceptions.)Be sure to enter your full information (Name, telephone number and email) and answer the questions. This information is required for entry. Please also indicate whether your prefer a zig-zag or horizontal grid set-up in the Display Show & Sale, whether you paint in watercolor or pastels (for shade consideration), and if you want to partner with a specific artist. If you’re a first-time participant and want to share 3 grids with another first-time artist, please contact Anne Kupillas, Co-Chair of the Event Committee at 562-362-0976 or anneQPdraws@gmail.com   While we cannot guarantee your preferences, every effort will be made to accommodate you so you will be happy and comfortable throughout the two-day show. Space is limited, so do not delay in signing up. Signups are by website entry only. Deadline to enter: June 7th.

Requirements: You must be personally present on both days for the entire day ,from morning load-in until 4pm tear down. No early tear down. Plein air and plein air-style studio work acceptable. However, no nudes, no abstract art, no portraiture, no figurative work (figure in landscape okay); originals only -- no reproductions or prints. No cards, prints or other work can be displayed for sale.  All art must be appropriately framed. No gallery wrap. (See separate rules document on website.) All labels must be printed, no handwritten labels. Minimum pricing $250 per item.  You will be asked to remove art not in compliance. There will be 2 meetings in advance of the show to go over the rules & instructions, and for us to answer any questions participants have.  Attendance at one of the two is required; see meeting dates below.

The Juried Show, July 8 – 14 - Please Read Carefully.

How to Enter: Once your registration is confirmed for the Weekend Show & Sale, you may enter the juried show at Onlinejuriedshows.com. You may enter up to 2 images with no additional entry fee required.  If you wish, you may enter three additional images for $15.00 each (for a total of 5 images submitted). All entry fees are non-refundable. Sixty paintings will be selected by our distinguished juror, to be announced. Please read the Juried Show separate prospectus below for full details/exact instructions.

The Juried Show runs from July 8-14. There is an artists’ reception on Friday evening, July 14th from 6-8pm. Artists may invite up to (2) VIP patrons/guests each to this event.

Requirements: You must be registered for the Weekend Display Show & Sale in order to enter this Juried Show. Original plein air paintings only will be accepted. Original means your own concept, design and execution, not done in a workshop or under the direction of supervision of another. Plein air means completed 70-100% at the outdoor subject matter’s location. (30 percent studio touch-up is allowed.) Paintings may be any medium, ie oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel. No prints or giclees. Canvas or panel size: 6x12 to 14x18 or square inch equivalent.  All paintings juried into the show must be framed, backed with a black or brown dust cover, and ready to hang with D-rings and wire. 

 

The Subject matter must be Newport Back Bay or one of the Parks , Beaches & Wilderness areas managed by OC Parks. No exceptions. Do not confuse OC Parks with state, beaches or local parks. If unsure, go to the OC Parks website for list of all OC Parks, Beaches and Wilderness areas.

The Show: Up to Sixty (60) paintings will be juried in to the show by our distinguished juror, to be announced. Accepted paintings must be delivered on Friday, July 7, 2023, to the Muth Interpretive Center. Conference Room between 10am – 1pm.  The paintings will be on display and for sale in the Muth Center Theatre from July 8-14. The artists’ reception/award presentation is Friday evening, July 14, from 6pm to 8 pm, at the Muth. Artists are required to remove their unsold paintings at the end of the reception.

 

Benefits: The 60 paintings accepted into the show will be on display and for sale at the Back Bay Muth Interpretive Center from July 8 – 14. The split is 65% to artist; 35% to NBC. NBC handles sales, sales tax and payment to artists. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to win prizes and recognition amongst your peers. The winners, selected by our distinguished juror, will be awarded generous cash and other prizes. First Place: $1,000; 2nd Place $750; 3rd Place: $500, Winner’s Circle: $500*; an NBC Robinson Award; an OC Parks award, and other categorical awards. 

 

*Prizes listed with cash amounts include 50% in cash and 50% in in-kind donations such as gift cards and vouchers from our event sponsors.
