ABOUT GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION AND THE EVENT
Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life, and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.
PASW Competition artists will have the opportunity to interpret this historic city as only a plein air painter can. Our event takes place during the annual Galveston Historic Home Tour that attracts thousands of visitors to the city. For 7 days, artists will have access to paint on the grounds of the homes on tour as well as special permission to other private locations including the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA. The Exhibition will be in the Grand Ballroom of the historic 1859 Aston Villa estate. Competition artists will donate a percentage from their sales during the exhibition to the Galveston Historical Foundation.
ABOUT THE JUROR OF AWARDS – MITCH BAIRD
Mitch is an Artist’s artist…he resides in the desert southwest in Mesa, Arizona with his wife and children. He is a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), American Impressionist Society (AIS) and the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA).
As a representational painter he believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us. He has a strong conviction that great artistic communication depends on solid draftsmanship, design and vision. His artistic desire is to “portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will experience what I see and in some sense be inspired, uplifted, or moved by my painting, whether it is of a small intimate setting or a grandiose subject.” We’re delighted that he will join us in Galveston, judge the exhibition and teach a 3-day workshop on a date to be determined later. To learn more about our juror and to see some of his latest work, please visit his website, www.mitchbaird.com
