Grand Prize:

Historic Cane Hill Young Artist Scholarship 

for 1st year at 

University of Arkansas School of Art

 

Competition Eligibility

Arkansas High School students are invited to enter this competition celebrating the talents of our state’s young artists. Open to all legal residents of Arkansas, in grades 10th-12th. Competition entries may be in any medium, including drawing, painting, etching, lithography, block-cut printing, digital art printing, photography, sculpture,  ceramics, textile, collage, and mixed-media. All genres, styles, and subject matter are welcomed. 

 

Awards

The competition Grand Prize, the “Historic Cane Hill Young Artist Scholarship” is a scholarship to the University of Arkansas Fayetteville School of Art covering tuition and fees for full-time enrollment in the 2020-21 academic year. This is a partnership between the University of Arkansas School of Art through the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences, and Historic Cane Hill, Inc. to provide Arkansas young artists with the opportunity to pursue their work and higher education in the state.

The winner of the Grand Prize scholarship will also be offered the option of accepting a $1,000 commission to create a work of art related to Historic Cane Hill. 

 

Additional Cash Awards, totaling $2,000, will be distributed to winning artists in the following categories (amounts subject to change):

 

(Dispersal of the award will be contingent upon successful admission to the University of Arkansas and enrollment as a major within the School of Art starting in Fall 2020. The award is not redeemable as cash and will be applied only to tuition and fees through the University of Arkansas scholarship office. Value of the award is approximately $9,400 for 30 hours of credit (15 per semester). Students under consideration for this award will be contacted by jurors prior to selection and be asked to provide additional work samples and/or references.)

Host:

This competition is hosted by Historic Cane Hill, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization based in the picturesque, art-friendly community of Cane Hill in Northwest Arkansas. Historic Cane Hill, Inc. is responsible for ambitious efforts to preserve and restore this historic community and is committed to the support and advancement of the arts as a primary component of revitalization efforts. Cane Hill College, chartered in 1852, was one of the first 4-year collegiate institutions in Arkansas and boasted an active program of painting and drawing in the 19th century. This competition honors that legacy.

 

Application Process and Entry Fee

Entries will be collected and juried online through www.OnlineJuriedShows.com. Each artist may enter a maximum of 3 works for a flat entry fee of $25. Entry fees are non-refundable. Exhibition Details

The exhibition will be held in The Museum Gallery at Historic Cane Hill. The gallery is housed in the historic A.R. Carroll building in Cane Hill, Arkansas. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located amid one of the densest concentrations of historic architecture in Arkansas. The recently restored building was constructed in 1900 and contains 1,000 square feet of gallery space. The gallery is adjacent to the Historic Cane Hill Museum. Cane Hill is situated in northwest Arkansas’ burgeoning art corridor, just 20 miles west of Fayetteville, and 45 miles from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Bentonville.

 

Publication

An exhibition catalog will be produced, containing the names of all exhibiting artists, award winners, and an exhibition statement authored by the event jury. The publication will be distributed to visitors at the exhibition venue, free of charge.

 

Artwork Presentation and Restrictions

Works on paper and photographs must be simply framed, with white or off-white matting, and should not exceed 30 inches in any single dimension (not including frame). Two-dimensional works not suitable for framing must be appropriately supported and ready to hang upon delivery. Sculptural work must not exceed a total weight of 40 lbs. and not extend greater than 36” in any direction. All artwork must be original.

 

Jurors

The names of the competition jurors will be announced prior to the close of the entry deadline. Jurors will be comprised of representatives from Historic Cane Hill, the University of Arkansas School of Art, and the Northwest Arkansas art community.

 

Sales

Artists may choose to make their artwork available for public purchase during the exhibition. If the artwork is available for purchase, the artist must indicate the sale price. If artwork is not available for purchase, it will be marked as NFS. Historic Cane Hill, Inc. will charge a sales commission of 15% of the sales price for any work sold during the exhibition. All sales will be conducted by representatives of Historic Cane Hill, Inc. and all monies will be collected by Historic Cane Hill, Inc. Applicable sales tax will be calculated, based on the indicated sales price of artwork sold. Sales tax will be included in the total sales price due from the buyer. Historic Cane Hill, Inc. will remit collected sales tax to the appropriate agencies. Payment for artwork sold during the exhibition will be forwarded to the artist in the amount of the indicated sale price, minus sales commission. Payment to the artist will be made no later than 30 days after the close of the exhibition. Payments will be delivered to the artist’s address indicated on the exhibition entry form, via USPS. All proceeds generated from artwork sales and entry fees will benefit Historic Cane Hill, Inc.

Artwork Delivery

Accepted work may be dropped-off in person at the venue address from 9:00am until 2:00pm Monday through Saturday between November 16 and November 30. Arrangements for after-hours delivery should be made in advance. Artwork should be shipped to the venue in time to arrive prior to 5:00pm November 29. Artists are responsible for providing insurance for artwork during shipping.  

All artwork accepted into the exhibition must include an identification tag, firmly attached, containing the artist’s name, address, phone number, email address, title of the work, and sale price (if applicable).

Artwork return

All unsold artwork which was dropped-off in person must be picked up in person at the exhibition venue between Wednesday January 22 and Saturday January 25, 2019 during the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm. All unsold artwork which was shipped to the venue, will be returned to the artist in their original shipping container. All artwork shipped to the location must have pre-paid return postage enclosed, unless it is to be picked-up in person following the exhibition. Artwork sold during the exhibition will be released to the buyer immediately upon completion of the sale. Buyers may pick-up the artwork in person.  Buyers wishing to have artwork shipped, are responsible for making all arrangements with the artist for pick-up, packing, and shipping, and are responsible for all related costs.

Disclaimer/Legal

Acceptance into this competition/exhibition constitutes agreement by the artist/parent/guardian to allow Historic Cane Hill, Inc. unrestricted use of images of submitted artwork, artist names, and photographs of artists for marketing and publicity purposes.  Historic Cane Hill, Inc. will exercise the greatest care in handling and storage of artwork while in its’ possession but accepts no liability for accidental damage or loss during the period when artwork is on-site. Artists are encouraged to secure insurance for their artwork, at their own expense.
