This event is open to all plein air artists in the Monterey Bay area, roughly 75 miles radius from Santa Cruz.  Up to 30 artists will be selected to participate.

It's time to Pop Up and Paint Out in Santa Cruz!

Paint downtown, along the river, anywhere in the city of Santa Cruz, really. Pick your spot, connect with your fellow artists and paint the town!

It's just a pop-up, so, you've only got till 3 pm to create a piece or two. Then show off your work during a summers evening exhibition and sale downtown, during  First Friday Santa Cruz.

People's Choice and Artists' Choice prize winners will be selected from works created at the event.  Sponsors will award up to $2,000 in purchase prizes, cash, and/or merchandise.

Requirements for Size and Sales
Up to two (2) paintings may be hung.  All works must be 12x18 or smaller and be priced at a minimum of $300. All sales are subject to a 40% commission, with 60% of proceeds going to artist.

Artists must provide their own transportation to and from Santa Cruz County. Lodging is not provided.

May 1:  Artists agreements signed and returned
June 1: 5-7 pm Optional early check-in and surface stamping
June 2: From sunrise to 3 pm - Paint in the city of Santa Cruz!
3 - 4 pm - Framed or gallery wrapped paintings due; artists hang own work outdoors at Plaza Lane.
4 pm - Show & Sale
7 pm - Artist Choice and People's Choice Awards votes tallied and winners announced.
8 pm - Exhibit and event ends; artists remove work.

Entry is $30 with the submission of 3 images, all plein air paintings.  All entry fees are non-refundable and must be paid by the entry deadline, April 19, 2017.  Acceptance is not guaranteed. Accepted artist will also pay a $30 participation fee.

Entering Your Images:
Entry form must be filled out in its entirety.  List sizes up to the nearest inch.  Submitted images must not include matting or frame.  Crop the photos to include only the artwork.  Be sure your images are right-side-up.

Before uploading your images, make sure they are smaller than 4MB, but at least 1920 pixels on the longest side at 72 dpi.  Images should be in JPEG format, sRGB color space.  Help in photographing your work and properly sizing your images can be found at:  If you need help entering your images or are unable to, please write to us here:

By signing the agreement to participate in Pop Up and Paint Out, you give permission to the organizers to use photos of you and your work for publicity and promotion purposes, and you agree to the sales commissions as described above.
