Filoli
Historical Garden of the World 2017

Prospectus and Call for Entries

Historic Gardens of the World – A Mixed-Media Exhibit

June 6 through August 6, 2017

Presented by the Friends of Filoli Art Committee

Filoli (www.filoli.org) is best known for its sixteen acres of Formal Garden that create a dynamic contrast to the six hundred acres of natural California coastal woodlands. Its beautiful Visitor and Education Center receives approximately 80,000 visitors annually. The exhibit will be held in the Center’s gallery.

EXHIBIT OVERVIEW
Gardens allow one to take a vast landscape and transform plants, ponds, fountains and statuary to create magical places for visitors to enjoy. They evoke feelings of tranquility and awe; they provide a place where visitors feel welcome and fortunate to be able to stay and reflect, interpret and rejuvenate. This exhibit will transport visitors to these inspiring gardens through a beautiful collection of paintings, drawings and 3-dimensional art. Let this exhibit be your encouragement to visit new places like Filoli.

Note: The artist must specify the image size, frame size (if framed), and the selling price or NFS for 2D art at the point of submitting the entries. For 3D entries, the object dimensions and selling price must be specified. The price for “not for sale artwork” is entered as NFS.

The entry deadline is on April 23, 2017. Please note we do not extend deadlines.

JURY PROCEDURE
Because the artwork will be juried using your submitted digital images, it is important that your entries are fully representative of the quality and processes that will be incorporated into the final exhibit article. Criteria for acceptance will include artistic sensibilities and adherence to the exhibit theme, and overall suitability for the exhibit. Selected images may be used for producing the exhibit postcard, for Filoli website, and for other promotional materials.

Selection results will be emailed on May 5, 2017 with detailed instructions for preparing and submitting the selected work to Filoli. The decision of the jury members is final. Artwork submitted may or may not be selected for the exhibit.

SALES
Filoli is pleased to extend the opportunity for participating artists to sell their exhibit piece(s), and other pieces, during the exhibition. All sales will be handled by Filoli and payment will be made to the artists, minus a 30% donation to Filoli, within 6 weeks after the exhibition.   Artists may also list their artwork as NFS (not for sale). Detailed instructions will be sent upon acceptance.

PRESENTATION OF ARTWORK
•    The 2D exhibit pieces are to be matted (if appropriate) and framed. The maximum frame dimensions permitted are 30 x 40 inches. The minimum frame dimensions permitted are 8 x 10 inches. Another display format may be used if approved by the curator on a case-by-case basis. No giclee reproductions of paintings, drawings, or collages are allowed.
•    Selected 2D artwork must be:
o    Framed and ready to hang – no sawtooths or projecting eye screws are allowed.
o    Plexiglas is preferred but glass is acceptable provided the framed work does not weigh more than 10 lbs.
o    Floating images are discouraged as they often “fall” during shipment.
•    The 3D exhibit pieces should not be larger than 15” height x 10” deep.
•    A label on the back of each submission must include the title of the art and artist’s contact information (name, phone number, e-mail address, home address).

Accepted entries that do not conform to the above presentation may be refused at the time of hanging.

RECEIVING ARTWORK
Artists who are accepted to exhibit will receive detailed instructions for shipping and hand delivery of artwork. The artist is responsible for all shipping and insurance costs. Exhibit materials must be received by May 31, 2017, via shipping carrier or hand delivered on May 30, between 10:00 am and twelve noon.

(To CONFIRM your MAIL delivery, use Priority Mail, confirmation delivery, FedEx or UPS with tracking verification. If artwork is to be returned via carrier, please include prepaid shipping label. ANY and All submissions and packing materials are non-returnable unless a SASE with return postage is included. )
