JURIED PHOTO COMPETITION/EXHIBIT 2017

This photography competition and exhibit is sponsored by the St. Lucie Chapter of the Florida Master Naturalists, in partnership with the Savannas Preserve State Park. The exhibit will be hosted at Savannas Preserve State Park, 2541 SE Walton Road, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952. St. Lucie Chapter of Florida master naturalists is a non-profit, volunteer citizen science group trained by the University of Florida/IFAS and facilitated by the St. Lucie County extension office. Program partners include the Oxbow Eco Center, Savannas Preserve State Park, Manatee Observation Center, Becker House Preserve, and other local environmental education providers.
Our mission is “to act as stewards for our environment, protecting what is critical to the survival of all species, including our own.” We propagate this awareness through the use of research-based information, teaching events, nature walks, community and state wide activities. We engage with others who are striving to protect and nurture our natural resources.
Eligibility
All amateur and professional photographers, age 18 and over, may enter in any category, except the YOUTH category, which is open only to entrants under the age of 18.
Prizes
There will be cash awards in each category as follows:
Best in Show: $250
1st Place each category: $100
2nd place each category: $ 50
Honorable mention ribbons may be awarded by the judges.
***NOTE: SPECIAL AWARDS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ENTRIES TAKEN WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE SAVANNAS PRESERVE STATE PARK, 2541 SE WALTON ROAD, PORT ST LUCIE, FL 34952 772-398-2779. This beautiful park stretches more than 10 miles from Ft. Pierce to Jensen Beach, FL and is the largest and most intact remnant of Florida’s east coast savannas. Visitors can learn about the environment at the park’s education center, walk the trails, canoe or kayak, picnic, bicycle, fish and more. The park is open daily and the Educational Center is open Thursday through Monday, 9am to 5pm.
Fees
A non-refundable entry fee of $25 is required to enter the competition. This entitles each photographer to submit one (1) entry. Additional images may be entered for an additional fee payment of $15 per image. Students entering the YOUTH category may submit two (2) entries for a discounted $15 fee with a $10 fee each entry thereafter.
Entering Your Images:
Entry form must be filled out in its entirety. List sizes up to the nearest inch. Submitted images must not include matting or frame. Crop the photos to include only the artwork. Be sure your images are right-side-up.
Before uploading your images, make sure they are smaller than 4MB, but at least 1920 pixels on the longest side at 72 dpi. Images should be in JPEG format, sRGB color space. Categories
Florida’s Natural Landscape – Scenic images of Florida’s coastal, uplands and wetlands areas, gardens where the main subject is a Florida native species, and habitats. Sunrise and sunset images should be submitted in this category.
Florida’s Native Flora - Florida native trees, plants, flowers and grasses.
Florida’s Native Fauna – Florida native wildlife including mammals, reptiles and amphibians, birds, insects and pollinators. Images of captive native fauna are not permitted unless appropriately captioned (“Captive”).
Art in Nature - Images of patterns in nature; abstracts; composites; and manipulated images (beyond basic sharpening, brightening and contrast). (This is a new category this year!)
Youth - Any native Florida images of flora, fauna or landscapes taken by a youth participant under the age of 18. 4-H members are encouraged to enter the contest.
** NO IMAGES OF DOMESTICATED ANIMALS OR NON-NATIVE SPECIES WILL BE ACCEPTED**

Beginning November 30, 2016, you may upload your images to: OnlineJuriedShows.com. On their home page, click on the Florida’s Natural Legacy photography competition 2017 link. Click on “Enter This Show,” and follow the instructions. YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR A FREE ACCOUNT PRIOR TO UPLOADING IMAGES. Payment must be made prior to the deadline. If payment has not been received by then, your image(s) may be removed. Submission deadline is 11:59 P.M. PDT, January 30, 2017.
Images will be reviewed by a three person jurying panel. The panel will select those images to be invited to exhibit. Notification of acceptance or rejection for the exhibit and for the awards will be made via email on or about February 6, 2017. The judges’ decisions, and those of the Florida Master Naturalists’ competition committee are final.
Criteria
• Images must be ONLY OF FLORIDA NATIVE SPECIES. Images of non-native Florida species will not be considered for an award.
• Submissions must be digital and submitted online via digital upload.
• If your image contains a recognizable person, you must provide a model release.
• Inappropriate subject matter will not be accepted.
• Black and White, monotone and color images are acceptable.
• An image may only be submitted in one category.
• Entries must be photographic in origin, and must be your own original concept and product.
• Only basic editing techniques are accepted such as: sharpening, brightness, saturation, contrast, color balance, tint, etc. in order to promote the natural appearance of your subject. Manipulated images, however, may be entered into the Art in Nature category.
• Graphic elements will not be allowed.
• Photos that have been published or sold may not be submitted.
• Entries, in the jury’s eyes, that contain added or manipulated elements in categories other than Art in Nature will be disqualified for award.
• There will be no exceptions to the criteria, rules or deadlines.
• Only original works of the submitter will be considered.
Accepted Exhibit Criteria
-Your exhibit print must be unmodified from your original submission, except for size.
-Minimum photo print size is 8” by 8”.
-Presentation must be professional in appearance using industry accepted matting and framing techniques. Gallery wrap canvas is acceptable. Exhibit pieces must be ready for hanging with wires – no saw tooth hangers, please. Framed pieces must not exceed 32” (strictly adhered to) in height or width, including frame. OUR SPACE IS LIMITED, SO PLEASE NO OVER-SIZED PIECES!
PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT ACRYLICS !! WE ARE UNABLE TO DISPLAY THEM!!
- A label should be affixed to the rear top left of your framed photograph. It must include: Name, Address, Phone Number, Email, Title and Sale Price if for sale. If your item is not for sale, please indicate by writing “NFS” (not for sale) on your label. If your exhibit piece does not have the required label with all information, it may not be hung.
- If your work is accepted for exhibit, it must be turned in at the Savannas Preserve State Park education building, 2541 SE Walton Road, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952 on the date(s) designated on your invitation to exhibit.
- A reception and exhibit opening will be held at the Savannas Preserve State Park on Friday, March 17, 2017, at 7:00 pm.
- Images must remain on display for the duration of the exhibit EVEN IF SOLD. Pick up instructions (date and time) will be sent in your invitation to exhibit.
Shipping:
Framed entries from outside the St. Lucie County, Florida area will be accepted for the exhibit if you receive an invitation by email. Photographers are responsible for all shipping arrangements and expenses. Round-trip shipping must be prepaid. Entries sent collect will not be accepted. All work must be packed in reusable USPS or FEDEX approved containers, and all packing material must be sufficient for safe return. Please do not use any “peanuts” or shredded paper. Crates must be clearly and properly labeled for return shipment. Photo Rights:
The Photographer maintains the copyright with FMNP (Florida Master Naturalist Program) limited use. The photographer grants the FMN permission to photograph and use their entry but only for archival purposes (to prevent duplication of future entries), publicity, website and promotional publications without further compensation to the copyright holder. Every effort will be made to contact the photographer for permission prior to any listed use. Proper credit will be given to the photographer.
Photographs for Sale:
If your work is for sale, please indicate the price on the back. A 20% commission will be retained on all photographs sold during the exhibit. Please price your work accordingly.
Liability:
The Florida Master Naturalists and the Savannas Preserve State Park will exercise reasonable care in the handling of your submissions. However, neither the St. Lucie Chapter of the Florida Master Naturalists or the Savannas Preserve State Park, the St. Lucie County extension office, or the University of Florida may be held responsible for the loss or damage of your submission due to fire, theft, vandalism or any causes. Submitted entries constitute agreement to the conditions set forth in this prospectus.
Judges:
There will be a panel of three (3) qualified preliminary judges from the Florida Master Naturalist St.Lucie Chapter and the Savannas State Preserve. The final jurying will be done when the exhibit is hung in place at the Savannas Preserve State Park.
