The North Carolina Statewide Pastel Juried Exhibition is a collaboration of three pastel societies of NC: The Appalachian Pastel Society (APS), the Pastel Society of North Carolina (PSNC) and the Piedmont Pastel Society (PPS). Our mission is to inspire artists, enhance the public’s appreciation for the lasting value and beauty of the medium of soft pastels, and to establish North Carolina as an emerging cultural market. The 2017 show will be hosted by the Piedmont Pastel Society. The exhibition returns this year  to The Cornwell Center, Charlotte NC.  This call requires membership in one of the three North Carolina pastel societies. You do not have to be a North Carolina resident to become a member. To join, please refer to one of the following web sites:

Juror of Selection, Colette Odya-Smith
A widely recognized pastel artist, Colette hails from Milwaukee, WI. She has been an artist her whole life, and spent a decade teaching art in Milwaukee schools. She discovered and fell in love with pastels at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. A professional artist for the past 20 years, Colette describes her approach to her work as follows:  "I continue to explore ways to express the mystery and wonder I feel in the 'school' of nature, seeking The Divine hidden in His creation".

Widely exhibited nationwide and overseas, her work has been featured in numerous art publications in the United States and France.

She has received many regional and national awards for her work, and has achieved the following designations:  Master Pastelist of Le Societe des Pastelistes de France, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Master Circle membership of the International Association of Pastel Societies, and Distinguished Pastelist honors in the Pastel Society of New Mexico.

Judge of Awards, Stan Sperlak
Stan is a distinguished artist from Cape May, NJ, who works from life with soft pastel on rough paper surfaces. Much of his work focuses on scenes from the mid-Atlantic, where Stan can often be found painting the beaches, marshes, forests, fields, and skies. Stan has lived all over the United States from Hawaii to Colorado, Minnesota, and New York but finds the light and subtle beauty of this area to be unparalleled.  He teaches workshops and guides other artists on painting adventures in Cape May’s back country.  He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and with Pat Witt of Millville, NJ. He is a member of the Mid Atlantic Plein Aire Painters, a signature member of The Pastel Society of America, The Maryland Pastel Society and the Cape May County Art League.
