JUROR – HULYA KARADENIZ

Hulya Karadeniz studied comparative arts and literature at the University of Istanbul. Building on her extensive experience in journalism, publishing, and public relations, she started collaborating as art consultant with leading Turkish museums and art foundations, including the Sakip Sabanci Museum and the Inan and Suna Kirac Foundation. She led and managed various projects, bringing invaluable collections such as the Letters in Gold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard University Museum, Louvre, LACMA and Berlin Guggenheim. As an art consultant, she has also worked with the Maegt Foundation for a Miro exhibition and the Getty Foundation on a long project to catalogue old manuscripts. In recent years, she has been working with female artists and collections by female artists with the aim to shine light on their stories and talent. She lives in Los Angeles and has family around the world — a keen traveler and explorer of local handcrafts and dishes wherever she goes.

THEME

Submitted artwork reflects the artist’s interpretation of the theme, “Mankind/Nature.” We hope you have some fun with this theme and be creative. Artwork on show theme is preferred, but how you interpret the subject is up to you. The Interrelationship between civilization and the environment has historically been mutually beneficial or one-sided and detrimental to the environment. In either case, it is clear that man's existence is distinctively different than any other creature. We build houses, corrals, buildings, skyscrapers, that irrefutably describe mankind's footprint upon the land. Give us your take on the landscape we inhabit, for better or worse, so that we may take insight to our intersection with our earth, whether historical or contemporary. We want to see your visual commentary!

ELIGIBILITY

The California Art League exhibit is open to all CAL and non-CAL entrants who wish to share their best work. CAL members’ dues must be current for 2022. New members join CAL as part of the entry process. The reduced membership rate for new members is exclusively for artists who have never been a member of CAL.

ARTWORK SUBMISSION CRITERIA AND CONTENT

CAL is dedicated to exhibiting excellent works of fine art which promote the artist’s artistic ability, vision, and creativity. In this respect, all artwork should be original and created from conception to completion by the artist within the last three years, and not previously shown in any CAL Juried Show. Artists are permitted to use their own photos as reference materials in the creation of their artwork, but not photos from other sources. No artwork copied from other artists work, copyrighted work, published photos, or created under the direct guidance of an instructor, are eligible. The only exception is collage work which may include small portions of other artist’s work.

ARTWORK MEDIA, ENTRIES and FEES

Artwork submissions can be in any of the following media: drawing, painting, photography, digital art, mixed media, collage, and sculpture. Choosing the 3D art option will allow you to submit multiple jpgs for the same piece of art, which is useful for sculptures and highlighting details of your artwork (if needed).

Entries will be made online and juried using digital images, (jpegs under 4 mb), through Online Juried Shows. Entries may be made in more than one medium. Artwork submissions are limited to five original artworks per artist.

Fees are: One or two entries: $35.00 for CAL members in good standing and $55.00 for non-CAL members. The $20.00 surcharge is a one-time offer that gives the new artist membership into CAL at a discount, which is good for the rest of the year. All entrants may enter additional artwork for $5.00 per piece fee up to a total of 5 entries. Payment is made through OJS via credit card or PayPal. Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the show. New members whose work is juried into this show will be considered “exhibiting members”, and will be eligible to submit work as an exhibiting member for acceptance in all future CAL shows.

FORMAT FOR DIGITAL IMAGES (jpegs) AND HOW TO SEND THEM

All entries must be submitted in digital JPEG format and under 4 mb. Photograph your art with a digital camera on a black background, (if cropping is not possible), without a mat or frame, and not through glass. Image quality is critical! Poor photography and presentation will affect acceptance by the juror. The digital image must represent the painting. Directions for submitting work to OJS is clearly described on the website in several topics listed on the sidebar of the main page: https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com//HowtoEnter.aspx.
