Spencertown Academy Arts Center

THEME: Deeper Than The Skin

This year we are excited to partner with the not-for-profit, A Still Small Voice 4 You, devoted to encouraging and supporting arts, music, literature, culture and community. ASSV directly supports individuals and organizations that share its mission and commitment.

           

The theme, Deeper Than The Skin, is drawn directly from the lyrics of musicians Reggie Harris and Greg Greenaway, who will be presenting Deeper Than the Skin: A Musical Presentation on Race in America” at 2:00 before the opening reception. Art submitted should have a direct connection to this important theme.

 

The concert is free but the suggested donation of $20 will benefit the Academy. Concert ticket sales to be announced closer to event. Please check our website for ever-changing COVID protocols.

 

ABOUT THE JUROR: Paula Bernay has roots in both New York City and the Berkshires and comes from a family of artists. She ran a gallery in Chicago and now co-owns Bernay Fine Art, a gallery in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

 

Media: Any media except fine crafts accepted.  No reproductions or giclees will be considered.

 

AWARDS: First Place: $300; Second Place: $200, Third Place: $100 and $100 for best interpretation of concept. There will be a $100 People’s Choice Award at the closing of the show.

 

ELIGIBILITY:

Submissions will be accepted from residents of Columbia County, NY and the following surrounding counties: Rensselaer, Albany, Schenectady, Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, and Saratoga, NY, Hampshire, MA, Litchfield and Fairfield in CT, and Berkshire in MA.

·      Saturday, September 17 - Notice of Acceptance.

·      Friday/Sept. 30 5-6:00  Sunday/October 2 9-10:00- Hand Delivery to gallery

·      Saturday, October 8 - Exhibition Opens to the Public, 1:00pm to 5:00pm

·      Sunday, October 9 - Concert 2pm/Opening Reception 4:00pm to
6:00pm

·      Sunday, November 6 - Show Closes - 5:00pm

·      Sunday, November 6 - Removal of Artwork, 5:00pm to 6:00pm

·      Monday, November 7 - Removal of Artwork, 11:00am to 1:00pm

 

 

HOW TO ENTER

All submissions must be made here (www.onlinejuriedshows.com). Once you have read the prospectus in its entirety, log in and click Enter this Show.

 Image files must be .jpg and under 4 mb. For the best quality image, your file should be as close to 1920 pixels on the longest side @ 72 dpi. Files should be no less than 800 pixels on the longest side. To resize your images to these specifications, follow this link: https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/1920FileUpload.aspx. Select your file and upload. Save the new image that uploads to your computer, and that's the file you'll upload when filling out your entry form.

Up to 3 entries may be submitted. Maximum size of entry, including frame if framed traditionally, must not exceed 40 inches in any direction. Artwork must not have been previously exhibited at the Academy. Work created in the last three years is preferred. 3-D art must be light enough for one person to handle and be able to be hung on the wall, displayed on the floor, an Academy pedestal, or on a shelf provided by the artist. If you have unframed works on paper, please note that we do not have a hanging clip system. Please contact us to determine best method to hang your work. art@spencertownacademy.org

ENTRY FEE:

ACCEPTANCE:

Notification of acceptance will be made on Saturday September 17. Artists will be notified by email to view the results in their artist profiles.  No substitutions of accepted work will be allowed. All work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, i.e. until 5:00 pm, Sunday, Nov. 6.

 

SALES:

The Gallery receives a 35% commission on any work sold.

ABOUT THE VENUE:

Housed in a historic landmark 1847 Greek Revival schoolhouse, Spencertown Academy Arts Center presents a variety of arts and cultural programming to an audience of local residents, second homeowners, and tourists from the Hudson Valley and Berkshire regions. Programs include: exhibitions of fine arts and craft; musical performances; spoken word, poetry and drama; workshops and classes.

 

The Academy, including the gallery, is a not-for-profit institution supported by membership, public and private donations and grant funding. A volunteer committee comprised of professional artists and curators administers the Gallery.

 

The Gallery comprises two exhibition spaces: the larger space is approximately 38’ X 15’ and the smaller is 16’ X 15’. Both rooms have abundant natural light as well as track lighting and 9.5’ ceilings.
