ABOUT THE JURORS: Kathi McCord and Peter Tobias

OMA Artist Alliance is thrilled to have the team of Kathi McCord and Peter Tobias as Co-Jurors for our “Growing Wild” exhibition at SDBG. Their individual fields of expertise converge for this botanical themed art exhibition.

Kathi McCord is an adjunct professor of drawing, design, printmaking, and film studies. She has exhibited her etchings and book illustrations for decades, and is known nationally as illustrator of more than 50 books for children. Marisol's Serape, a story she wrote and illustrated, which was based on her travels to the outdoor markets of Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru, sold over 1.5 million copies. Environmental degradation has been one of Kathi’s major concerns, exemplified by her 18-foot graphite mural “Vanishing Rainforest”, which she systematically erased in its entirety before audiences over the course of a 3-day ArtWalk in San Diego.

With a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Peter Tobias enjoyed a long career in science while developing an interest in orchids. Beginning with a single Phalaenopsis plant, his orchid collection and expertise have grown exponentially. He co-founded and serves as President of the Orchid Conservation Alliance (OCA) and lectures internationally at orchid societies, botanical gardens, and conservation conferences. He also leads OCA eco tours to exotic locations around the globe to raise awareness and funds for orchid conservation.

ABOUT THE VENUE:
The San Diego Botanic Garden is a 37-acre urban oasis located in the heart of Encinitas with four miles of garden trails and exotic specimen plants from throughout the world. The Garden serves a perfect backdrop for the botanical themed Growing Wild exhibition on display in the Ecke Building from August 11 to September 27, 2019. The Ecke Building hosts many events and meetings, providing considerable visibility for artists and their artworks.

Garden admission fees are waived for artists and their guests for the opening reception August 18. Garden admission is also free for San Diego County residents on Tuesday, September 2. On all other days, paid admission to the Garden or SDBG membership is your admission to view the Growing Wild exhibit. Daytime admission (9:00 – 5:00pm) is always free for Garden members. (Visit https://www.sdbgarden.org for SDBG membership and admission information.)   Parking is free for Garden members and cars with 4 or more passengers; $2.00 for nonmembers.
