Arkansas Territory Bicentennial Art Exhibition

Introduction and Overview:

The States of Arkansas and Oklahoma will commemorate 200 years of the Arkansas Territory in 2019.

This project will commemorate this milestone by presenting historical subjects through the medium of fine art. Paintings and drawings based on people, places or things from any of the 200 years’ history of the geographical area referred to as the Arkansas Territory of 1819, will be of a quality worthy of becoming part of a permanent historical archive of the States of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The Exhibition will travel to several locations including museums and galleries in Arkansas and Oklahoma throughout 2019 and 2020.

The Territory of Arkansas, initially organized as the Territory of Arkansaw was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 2, 1819 until June 15, 1836, when the final extent of the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of Arkansas.

Arkansaw Territory (later Arkansas Territory) was created from the portion of the Missouri Territory lying south of a point on the Mississippi River at 36 degrees north latitude running west to the St. Francis River, then followed the river to 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude, then west to the territorial boundary. This included all of the present state of Oklahoma south of the parallel 36°30' north.

HOAA is in the process of securing show venues throughout the Region. There will be an initial opening exhibition at Historic Cane Hill Museum in Cane Hill, AR March - May 2019 followed by

a traveling exhibition. Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock will be hosting a portion of the show during July and August 2019. Additional locations will be announced in the future. Accepted works will be included in a high-end book printed to commemorate the event.

Cash and Prize awards will be given, including a $5,000 Best of Show award.
