We are pleased to announce the 2nd annual “Paint the Poudre Plein Air” (PPPA), a plein air painting competition, exhibition and sale.  PPPA will focus on the unique beauty of the Cache La Poudre River, the only remaining “Wild and Scenic” river in the Colorado and encompassing the towns of Bellvue, Fort Collins, and LaPorte Colorado.  The exhibition will be hosted at Carnegie Art Center and Gallery in Old Town, Fort Collins, CO.  Part of the proceeds from PPPA will benefit Save the Poudre, a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to “Protect and Restore the Cache La Poudre River”.  This show is open to all artists, 18 and older, working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, or pastel.

Eligibility

  • Open to all artists over 18
  • Original plein air works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, or pastel.
  • Work must be ready to be displayed, and clearly labeled with the artist’s name and contact information.

Calendar

  • Submissions must be received on or before April 10th  2014.
  • All those who have entered will receive a reply on April 14th  2014.
  • All selected artists must RSVP via email at mm@mariemassey.com no later than April 16th 2014.

  • ***** If you are accepted you will be required to pay an additional $65 participation fee at the beginning of the event when you get your participating canvasses stamped.  

Juror

Renowned plein air artist Marc Hanson will judge the show.  He is a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America and a distinguished workshop instructor in plein air and studio. Marc's work is represented in eight premiere galleries in the United States and is included in many private and corporate collections both nationally and internationally.

Awards

  • Best of Show  - $400 cash/value sponsored award
  • 1st Place Award - $300 cash/value sponsored award
  • Commissioned Paintings Purchase Awards - $300- $3000 each – The purchaser awards a ribbon. These awards will be treated as sales with 60% to the artist, 40% to the organizers and Save the Poudre.
  • 2nd Place Award - $200 Gift Certificate to a business in Fort Collins/sponsor gift
  • 3rd Place Award - $100 Gift Certificate to a business in Fort Collins/sponsor gift

Application Fee & Commission Agreement: There will be a $35 application to submit up to 3 digital images to be considered for participation in the event, $5 each additional, up to a total of 5 works. This fee must be returned with the application and artist’s submissions. This is a nonrefundable fee. The exhibition will include advertising, press, entertainment, and refreshments. Any art sold will be commissioned at a percentage of 60% to the artist and 40% to the organizers of the event and to benefit Save the Poudre.

 

Calendar of Events:
Saturday July 19th 8:30am to 10am, Check-In, Orientation and Welcome Breakfast  Everyday Joes, 144 S Mason St, Fort Collins, CO 80524

  • Meet and Greet Breakfast:  Starting at 8:30 am, we will begin registration at Everyday Joe’s in Fort Collins, Co where we will host a welcome breakfast.  You can bring as many canvasses (watercolor paper or board) as you wish to be stamped for the paint out.  Remember that you may replace any paintings that you sell with another painted during the Paint Out (with the Paint Out stamp on the back).  You may also get additional canvases stamped during the course of the event.  The stamp will be available during the course of the painting period.
  • At this time you will receive a map detailing recommended places to paint.  You may paint anywhere along the Poudre River and Old Town Fort Collins area.  We ask that you paint at least one day in Old Town Fort Collins.  The 26th , 27th 28th , would be the best days to paint in Old Town in order to build public awareness and interest in the show. 
  • We are working to pre-sell you work to “Purchase Award Sponsors”.  In 2013 had four Purchase Award Sponsors.  We hope to have at least that number for PPPA 2014. You will also receive a list of private businesses, homes etc. for which there is a standing commitment to purchase from the proprietors of said locations.  These commissioned paintings will have a committed purchase price between $300 and $3000.  
  • You will also receive a package with coupons for local business and recommended activities if you are traveling with non-painter family members.
  • Maximum size of a framed canvas cannot exceed 36” x 36”.  You are responsible for providing the frames.  Gallery wrapped paintings with painted or finished edges are also acceptable.  All paintings must be wired and ready to hang.

*****You may paint for the next 10 days until 12 noon on July 29th.

Tuesday July 29th by 12 to 3 pm Check-In Tuesday Afternoon, Carnegie Museum and Gallery.  You will check in three framed paintings (gallery wrapped with painted or finished edges are also acceptable) beginning at 12pm at the Carnegie Museum and Gallery.  All paintings must be wired and ready to hang.   The sale price is split with 60% going to the artist, and 40% going to the organizers and to benefit Save the Poudre.  When turning in your work, you will fill out an inventory listing the three paintings you wish to submit for the judging in the exhibit.  You will choose from a bag of numbers corresponding to exhibit spaces.  You will hang your own work in the numbered space you chose.  Depending on the number of participating artists and the size of your paintings, there may be room for you to hang up to five total paintings but only 3 will be judged.
Wednesday July 30th

    • 10 am to 12 pm Judging-Our Judge,  Marc Hanson,  will view paintings and select winners.  Ribbons will be placed on winning paintings. 
    • 12 pm to 6 pm - Commissioned painting buyers and Purchase Award Sponsors will select their winners and place their ribbons.
    • 12 pm to 6pm – Exhibit open to the Public

Thursday July 31st

    • 12 pm to 6 pm - Commissioned painting buyers and Purchase Award Sponsors will select their winners and place their ribbons.
    • 12 pm to 6pm – Exhibit open to the Public

Friday August 1st

    • 9:00 to 12:00 – Optional Quickdraw  Artists paint in Old Town Fort Collin and on the library grounds.
    • 3:00 to 4:00 – Artists turn in and hang their Quick Draw painting in their designated area.
    • 4:00 to 4:30 – Mark Hanson judges the Quick Draw
    • 5:00 to 6 pm- Meet the Artists We are promoting this time as “meet the artists” so that potential buyers have a chance to interact with you.  You will also want to turn in your ballot for the “Artist Choice Award”.
    • 6pm- Award Ceremony The award ceremony will be Friday promptly at 6 pm.  If your painting received a ribbon, you will need to take it from your wall and then, bring it to the MC when your name is called so that we can photograph you with the painting.  After you receive your award, you will replace your painting on the wall.
    • 5PM- 9PM The evening reception will open.   IF YOU SOLD ONE, TWO OR THREE OF YOUR PAINTINGS ON FRIDAY, YOU MAY HANG ADDITIONAL PAINTING(s) THAT YOU COMPLETED DURING THE PAINT OUT TO SELL THROUGHOUT THE EXHIBIT.

Pick up/Ship out - Sunday, August 3rd  , 9:00 to 11:00am
Pick up unsold work on Sunday the 3rd  after the close of the show.  You may also make arrangements to have your work sent to you.  If necessary Marie Massey will be available to coordinate the shipment of your paintings after the show closes.

Lodging-There will be limited host housing available to artists on a first come, first serve basis.  There will also be rooms available at select local hotels at a group discount rate TBA.
